What Information Do You Need for a Home Battery Quote?

A practical brief for requesting a home battery quote: share loads, backup goals, solar and inverter details, installation limits, product scope and document requirements.

    When requesting a home battery quote, “I need 16kWh” is a useful starting point—but it is not enough to define a safe or comparable system.

    A useful quote request should explain the loads the battery must support, how long backup should last, what solar and inverter equipment already exists, where the system will be installed, which parts you expect to receive, and which documents or delivery terms matter. Without that information, two quotations can appear similar while covering very different products and responsibilities.

    This checklist helps a homeowner, installer or small integrator prepare a clear battery-system brief. It does not replace a site survey, local electrical requirements or the manuals for the exact battery, inverter and protection equipment.

    Send these nine groups of information with your home battery inquiry:

    1. Project location and use case: country or region, grid-connected or off-grid, backup or self-consumption goal, quantity and target timeline.

    2. Energy use: daily or monthly consumption, preferred backup duration and the loads that must remain powered.

    3. Power demand: normal running power, simultaneous loads and starting or surge loads from motors, pumps, compressors or tools.

    4. Solar and inverter details: exact model numbers, system voltage, battery-voltage window, charge and discharge limits, phase arrangement and communication requirements.

    5. Battery route: complete battery, DIY kit with separate cells, cells only or a staged expansion plan.

    6. Installation conditions: indoor or outdoor location, available dimensions, temperature, weight support, cable route, service access and future expansion space.

    7. Protection and integration scope: enclosure, BMS, fuse or breaker, disconnect, cables, monitoring, inverter and installation responsibility.

    8. Documents and evidence: datasheets, packing list, test records, serial or batch information, manuals, wiring information, warranty terms and transport documents where applicable.

    9. Commercial assumptions: required quantity, delivery address, preferred shipping basis, target date and any budget range used for comparing options.

    The more precise the brief, the less likely a low price or a large kWh label is hiding missing components, an incompatible inverter or an installation task that was never included.

    Start With the Question the Battery Must Answer

    Before choosing a capacity, write one sentence describing the job:

    > “This system should keep these essential loads running for approximately this long, using this solar and inverter setup, at this location.”

    Examples of different project questions include:

    • backup for a refrigerator, router, lights and a small communications system;
    • overnight self-consumption for a home with an existing solar array;
    • off-grid power for a cabin with no reliable utility connection;
    • a larger system for pumps, workshop tools or other intermittent high-power loads; or
    • a modular system that must support additional battery units later.

    These are not interchangeable requirements. A system can have enough energy for a long runtime but still be unable to start a motor. It can also have adequate inverter power but insufficient usable energy for the desired backup period.

    1. Send the Project Location and Operating Goal

    The first part of the brief should state:

    • country, region and installation address or at least the delivery region;
    • grid-connected, off-grid, backup-only or solar self-consumption application;
    • single-phase, split-phase or three-phase supply where relevant;
    • whether the battery will serve the whole home or only selected circuits;
    • the number of systems or battery units required;
    • desired delivery or installation window; and
    • any known local requirements for permits, grid connection, fire protection or installation method.

    Location affects shipping, local electrical practice, inverter availability and the documents a project may require. It is not a reason to promise a universal approval or installation outcome. The final design must be checked against the rules that apply at the site.

    2. Separate Energy From Power

    Give the supplier two different descriptions of the load.

    Do not combine every appliance nameplate into one assumed total without considering duty cycle. A refrigerator, pump or compressor may have a short starting demand that is different from its running demand. A battery quote should show which power assumption was used and whether a surge requirement was included.

    3. Define the Backup Target

    State the backup target in operational terms:

    • whole-home backup or selected circuits;
    • expected outage duration or overnight runtime;
    • minimum reserve to keep after a normal evening;
    • whether the battery should recharge from solar, grid power, a generator or a combination;
    • whether backup should be automatic or manually switched; and
    • whether some loads may be shed when the battery reaches a reserve limit.

    “Backup” can mean a short interruption ride-through, several hours of essential loads or multi-day off-grid autonomy. The quotation should identify which interpretation it uses. Ask for both the nominal energy and the estimated usable energy under the stated operating limits, efficiency assumptions and reserve settings.

    4. Share Exact Solar and Inverter Information

    If an inverter or charger already exists, send its exact brand and model—not only the brand name. A photograph of the rating label or a link to the manual can help, but redact personal information and account details.

    Ask the quote to account for:

    • battery nominal-voltage class and permitted voltage window;
    • maximum continuous charge and discharge current;
    • continuous AC output and surge capability;
    • solar input range and charge-controller limits;
    • phase arrangement and backup-output configuration;
    • CAN, RS485 or other communication requirements;
    • protocol profile, firmware and cable or pinout requirements where communication is used;
    • permitted parallel-battery architecture; and
    • the sequence for pre-charge, startup and commissioning.

    The words “CAN compatible” or “RS485 compatible” do not prove that two specific products will communicate.     5. State Which Product Route You Want Quoted

    A supplier cannot compare a complete battery, a DIY kit and cells-only on price alone because the included work and responsibility are different.

    Complete assembled battery

    Ask what is included in the finished battery and what remains external:

    • cells and cell model;
    • BMS model and current limits;
    • enclosure and protection devices;
    • terminals, connectors and communication accessories;
    • monitoring or display hardware;
    • factory test records and commissioning information; and
    • installation, inverter and cabling boundaries.

    DIY battery kit

    Ask for the exact variant-level packing list. Confirm whether cells are included, compatible or sold separately; which BMS model is supplied; which protection devices are included; and which assembly, configuration and commissioning steps remain with the buyer or installer.

    Cells only or a staged project

    If the project is for an integrator or experienced builder, state whether you need cells only, a matched cell set, a BMS, an enclosure, busbars or the complete kit. Also state whether the cells will be used in a new pack or added to an existing pack. Mixing a new purchase into an existing battery requires a separate compatibility and condition review.

    6. Describe the Installation Space

    Provide the information needed to check physical fit and serviceability:

    • indoor, outdoor, garage, utility room or remote installation;
    • available length, width and height, plus the access path to the final position;
    • floor, rack or wall support and the expected loaded weight;
    • ambient temperature range and exposure to moisture, dust or salt air;
    • cable-entry direction and approximate cable runs;
    • required access for inspection, isolation and service;
    • ventilation or enclosure requirements set by the local installation; and
    • space reserved for a second battery, additional protection or future expansion.

    Do not assume that a “wall-mounted” or “48V” label proves that a product will fit the intended room. Ask for the exact dimensions, mounting method, terminals, cable bend space and service access for the selected variant. The usable design has to fit the real installation, not only the product title.

    7. List the Protection and Integration Boundary

    Ask the quotation to identify who supplies and verifies each part of the current path:

    • main fuse or DC breaker;
    • DC isolation switch or disconnect;
    • busbars, lugs, cables and strain relief;
    • BMS and temperature-sensor installation;
    • inverter-side pre-charge or contactor requirements;
    • grounding or bonding where required by the system and local rules;
    • communications cable and monitoring hardware;
    • enclosure insulation, covers and labels; and
    • installation, testing and commissioning.

    The BMS is not automatically a substitute for a correctly selected fuse, disconnect, conductor or installation review. A useful quote makes exclusions visible instead of making the buyer infer them from a product photograph.

    8. Request the Documents You Will Actually Need

    State the documents required for your project before comparing prices. Depending on the product route and destination, the list may include:

    • cell, battery, BMS and inverter datasheets;
    • exact model and variant information;
    • packing list and included/excluded component list;
    • serial, QR-code or production-batch records where applicable;
    • factory test, capacity or matching evidence where offered;
    • installation, wiring, communication and commissioning instructions;
    • warranty scope, exclusions and evidence requirements;
    • transport or dangerous-goods documents required for the shipment; and
    • information needed by the local installer, inspector or grid operator.

    Do not request a document simply because it sounds reassuring. Ask what decision it supports and whether it applies to the exact cells, BMS, battery variant or shipment being quoted.

    9. Ask for a Quote With Explicit Assumptions

    When you receive the quote, ask the supplier to show these fields in writing:

    If two suppliers answer these fields differently, normalize the scope before comparing the total. A lower number may exclude cells, protection, shipping, installation, taxes or the documentation needed to commission the system.

    Common Home Battery Inquiry Mistakes

    Sending only a kWh target

    Energy does not describe inverter power, surge demand, battery current, reserve settings or usable energy.

    Naming an inverter brand without a model

    Communication, voltage windows, current limits and firmware support are model-specific.

    Asking for “everything included” without defining everything

    State whether you need cells, enclosure, BMS, protection, cabling, inverter, installation, documents or shipping. Otherwise each supplier may interpret the phrase differently.

    Omitting the installation environment

    Temperature, moisture, access and structural support can change which product route is suitable.

    Treating a product page as a complete system design

    How much information do I need before requesting a quote?

    Do I need the exact inverter model?
